Zachary Cornwell
Senior Analytical Chemist
BS Chem UCLA; PhD Chem UC Irvine

Zach joined our team in 2024 after completing his PhD in Physical Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine. His academic research was focused on gas-phase kinetics using flash photolysis transient absorption spectroscopy. In graduate school, he also developed expertise in GC/MS, UPLC, and FTIR techniques. Zach is the first author of four out of the six peer-reviewed papers he published in journals such as the Journal of Physical Chemistry.

Prior to embarking on his doctoral research, Zach earned his bachelor’s of science degree in Chemistry at UCLA in 2016. During the intervening years, he worked as a QC/QA chemist, applying UPLC techniques for chemical assays related to drug delivery, active drug identification, and purity of pharmaceutical aerosol products. Additionally, he worked as an analytical chemist preparing and analyzing organosilanes, organometallic compounds, and inorganic complexes that were involved in the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on semiconductor surfaces, where he used GC/MS, NMR, and Ion Chromatography (IC).

After being with us for just a year, Zach has extended his analytical chemistry repertoire to total organic carbon (TOC), headspace-GC/MS for residual solvents analysis, and ICP-MS for heavy metals determination. All of his applied instrumentation is applicable to the testing of biomaterials, organic and aqueous extracts/leachables of biomedical devices, and pharmaceutical APIs.
